LUMIO: A mission to observe the Lunar Far-Side by Politecnico di Milano

Politecnico di Milano has emerged as one of the four winners of the SYSNOVA competition organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the theme of Lunar Cubesats for Exploration (LUCE), a futuristic mission to the Moon.

The Department of Aerospace Science and Technology of the Politecnico leads the team that proposed the mission LUMIO: Lunar Meteoroid Impacts Observer. The project LUMIO shall utilise a CubeSat, which is 20 cm X 20 cm X 30 cm in dimension, that shall be inserted into a Halo Orbit around the Second Lagrangian-Point of the Earth-Moon system to observe the impacts of Meteoroids on the Lunar Far-Side’s surface. The mission shall provide vital information about the Meteoroid Environment impacting the Earth-Moon system.
